Where they're located in New Jersey: 

Eastern Mud Turtles are located in the Southern Region and some Northern Regions of the state

Placement on Endangerment Scale: 

Least Concern (LC)

Physical characteristics:

Eastern Mud Turtles have a smooth, black or olive shell, with small yellow spots on their head. They may occasionally have yellow streaks as well. Eastern Mud Turtles grow to be 3-5 inches in length.

Preferred habitat:

Muddy bottoms of shallow bodies of water, ponds, ditches or marshes
